Your Best Way to Reach Groups (May 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome to the May edition of FYI, brought to you
by Leisure Group Travel, TRAVEL Tips, Leisure Travel
Directory and Goexperience.com.
Okay, most of us would agree that business is up this
year, but perhaps even more encouraging is the insane
number of advertiser leads we're generating this year.
I'm not trying to brag (okay, maybe just a wee bit).
But I just pulled a report this morning and through April
of this year (4 issues) we've generated a total of
5,391 group leads, a 90% increase over last year. Why
is this important? Lead generation is a leading indicator
of future intent to travel; after all, our readers request
information on places they want to visit over the next
12 - 18 months. So we're not only currently
experiencing a period of recovery for the industry, but
based on lead generation, we should continue to see
strong growth in the group travel market through
2005. Remember, you heard it here first!
Thanks for reading,
jg
Calculating Trust
by Tom Sant
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Creating trust is an important part of selling. If we
understand the components of trust, we can work that
equation so that it comes out in our favor. Most people
prefer to buy from people they trust. That sounds like
common sense. Almost nobody would dispute it. But it
leaves an important issue unresolved:

What is trust? And what are the behaviors that will
contribute most directly to the creation of trust?

Here's a simple equation that expresses the essence of
trust:
Trust = Rapport x Credibility/Risk

GO is...Going Strong!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You've probably heard about GO, our organization for
group travel organizers. In just the few short months
since it's been announced paid dues membership has
just reached 85, with roughly one-third being bank
travel organizers and nearly half independent tour
operators. Virtually all travel internationally and
cruise. While there is a wide variation in size, the
median number of overnight trips is in the 40-50 range.
The commissionable travel insurance program is a big
draw, as are the business services discount program
and the discounts on travel publications. We are
poised to go forward in three directions. First, we will
continue to market to grow group organizer
membership. Second, we are working to develop new
member benefits and expect to announce shortly the
details of a group-rate cruise program. Third, as our
membership approaches the 100 mark, we will be
developing other categories of allied membership
including DMOs and other facets of the industry.
Visit www.goexperience.com to see our current list of member benefits. >>
Rhode Island Residents Discover "There's No Place Like Home"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
More than 1,000 Rhode Islanders participated in the
state's first ever organized group tour on May 1st. The
event encouraged residents to become tourists in their
own backyard. Fifteen itineraries throughout the state
were offered and a total of 22 motorcoaches were
used. Participants paid a modest fee.

"There were several reasons for offering the tour," says
David DePetrillo, Director of the Rhode Island Tourism
Division. "First, to get people out to see their own
state; second to create awareness of tourism, the
state's second largest industry; and third, to invite
people to become Rhode Island Tourism Ambassadors."

With many state and regional tourism offices facing
historic budget situations and an unsympathetic
legislature, organizing events like this help create a
grass-roots level awareness and appreciation for
tourism as a vital component to not only our economy,
but also our well being.
