Your Best Way to Reach Groups (January 2004) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Welcome
to the January edition of FYI, brought to you by Leisure Group Travel, TRAVEL
Tips, Leisure Travel Directory and Goexperience.com. Since it is indeed
the New Year, the conference schedule starts to heat back up again. PTM is
on the road this week, attending the ABA Annual Conference - look for
us! Also, come February 17th we're back in the Big Apple as a co-sponsor
of Theatre Direct's Broadway Festival which brings nearly 2,000 group
travel planners to New York to see the latest and greatest of Broadway entertainment
along with a fun and informative day visiting partner attractions and
dining establishments. Primarily, it gives us the opportunity to expose our
publications to group decision makers from a highly-desirable demographic
set - groups that plan Broadway theater. Finally, February 28 we'll
be exhibiting at Travel South, held this year in Mobile, Ala. Some of you
may be attending the Bank Travel conference in February (sorry, we're
banned). If so, you'll be interested to learn some of the recent developments
in the market - see related article. Many of you don't have the time,
or budget to attend conferences. Well, we've found a way to bring them
to you with our new monthly series of Business Builder Teleconference calls.

Group Travel Writer Wins NATJA Award ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We were pleased that Linda Hagen Miller's three-part series, "On the
Trail of Lewis & Clark," received a Grand Prize in the North American
Travel Journalists Association awards competition. 349 submissions were
judged and 31 First Prizes were awarded to publications, CVBs and businesses.
Miller's was one of only three awarded a Grand Prize.
Each of our issues has a special interest feature article, which is
intended to cut across geographic boundaries and provide travel planners
with new ideas for theme trips. In the case of the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial
article, which was conceived nearly two years ago, the scope of their trip
and the many events and sites along the way dictated a three-part feature.
We are fortunate to have Linda Hagen Miller as one of our regular writers
in both Leisure Group Travel and TRAVEL Tips, as she has extensive experience
writing about group travel, as well as having special expertise on the West. This
award is a testament to the fine job she did, as well as being representative
of the fine editorial in our publications where we conceive each story on
merit, not based on how big an ad someone buys. Experiences
& the Next Generation of Travel Products By Joe Veneto, The Opportunity
Guy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Very few people in the tour &
travel industry will dispute the changing dynamics of the industry over the
past several years. The major reasons for these shifts have been changes
with our customers. The late 70s, 80s and early 90s were the golden age of
the tour industry. The first blue hairs were showing up with their bingo
cards. People turning 65 had a pension, social security, free time and were
on the road. With little travel experience, these folks would go absolutely
anywhere and they did. Fast forward to the 21st Century; we have a
new tour customer. No longer is it cool to be a golden anything, let
alone senior citizen. In order to capture the new consumer, and not just
the mature segment of the market, travel marketers need to create experiences
that will resonate with travelers. Read

Withdrawals ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We are receiving at least
one notice a week to remove a bank travel club from our subscriber list,
not because of lack of interest, but because the bank has canceled the
travel program. Bank travel clubs have been a mainstay of the group travel
business for the past two decades, primarily in small and medium-sized
communities. However, as banks continue to consolidate into ever-larger conglomerates,
there seems to be less concern for community outreach and loyalty and
more concern for bottom line profitability. We're concerned about this,
and as a result of all of this activity, we have commissioned both an article
for an upcoming edition of Leisure Group Travel magazine and a seminar
in our Professional Education series on what bank and S & L travel groups
can do to reshape themselves to this new reality. Are you Looking
to Reach Young Adult & Student Groups? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As announced last month in FYI, Leisure Group Travel will feature two (June
& December) young adult and student travel sections aimed at this fast
growing, eclectic market segment. In addition to the 15,500 distribution

distribution pegged for two major band and choir trade shows and conferences.
